Another race booked. Scurry to the Sea 2023: A Breath-taking Edinburgh Running Adventure

Another race booked. 23rd July 2023, the Scurry to the sea.

The Scurry to the Sea 2023 race offers participants a unique and exhilarating 12-mile, self navigating, running experience while showcasing some of Edinburgh's most stunning views.

The race begins with a challenging hill run to the top of Allemuir in the Pentland Hills, offering a panoramic vista that stretches all the way down to the sea. From there, it's an exciting downhill journey, combining a mix of cross country, urban orienteering, and road running as you make your way towards the finish line on Musselburgh beach.

The course itself is a perfect blend of diverse terrains, ensuring that participants are constantly engaged and tested throughout the race. Starting from the Hillend ski centre car park, the route takes you through paths, valleys, and parks of your own choice as you self navigate, offering a scenic and ever-changing backdrop to the challenge. The race organizers have carefully planned mandatory checkpoints, ensuring that participants stay on track while enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

One aspect that deserves special mention is the bus transport option offered by the organizers. For a nominal fee, participants can choose to book bus transport from Musselburgh Fisherrow harbour beach to the race start at Hillend. This convenient service eliminates the hassle of arranging transportation and allows participants to focus on the race. The bus departure time is early, but the organizers ensure a smooth transition from the bus to the race registration at Hillend.

The commitment to participant satisfaction and attention to detail is evident throughout the event. The organizers strive to communicate all necessary information promptly. This level of organization creates a sense of confidence and ease for participants, knowing that they are in capable hands.

While the race is challenging, it remains accessible to runners of various skill levels. The inclusion of mandatory checkpoints ensure that participants can navigate their way without feeling lost. The suggested route takes runners through breathtaking locations, such as Oxgangs, Braidburn Valley Park, and Craigmillar Castle Park, providing a glimpse of Edinburgh's natural beauty.

I strongly suggest sitting down with the organisers suggested route before hand and plotting the route on your own mapping system. I use a Garmin watch and it have a mapping system built in that I can pre plot and save for use in the day. I am hoping this will make the navigation easier as I run.

The final stretch of the race, from Brunstane Burn path to the beach, should be a thrilling moment as it brings my journey to a hopefully triumphant conclusion. The sight of the marked entrance to the beach and the obligatory scurry across the sand will create a sense of accomplishment and make the finish line a truly memorable experience.

In conclusion, the Scurry to the Sea 2023 race is an extraordinary running event that combines physical challenge, natural beauty, and the spirit of exploration. With its diverse course, breathtaking views, meticulous organization and a test of my navigation skills. This race is an opportunity for participants to push their limits while immersing themselves in the picturesque landscapes of Edinburgh. Whether you are a seasoned runner seeking a new adventure or a nature lover looking to embrace the beauty of Scotland's capital city, this event is a must-do.

Watch this space for a follow up blog once I have completed this race. Pictures and report on how I did and how my kits stood up to the task.
